Assessment Form: Scale

Selecting the assessment scale

Choosing the correct assessment scale is an important step in creating your assessment. The scale determines the grade based on the candidate's score percentage and the assessment pass mark.

Setting up assessment scales

The assessment scale assigns a grade based on the percentage a candidate scores and the pass mark of the scale. It is therefore important to configure the correct scale and pass mark percentage.

Assessment scales are configured in the Admin section under Assessment scales. These scales are customisable. As an author, you can select an existing scale and modify the Pass Mark for your Assessment Form. Changes to the Pass Mark automatically recalibrate the grade boundaries before and after it, distributing them evenly.

Important considerations
  • Rounding rules: Always consider your environment's rounding rules when setting up assessment scales.
  • Updates and reattachments: If a shared scale is updated, inform authors, as they may need to reattach the updated scale to their assessments.
  • Copying assessments: Be aware that copying an assessment may carry over an outdated assessment scale.

Select manually

When editing your Assessment Form, select an assessment scale as follows:

  1. Go to the Scale tab.
  2. Choose the desired assessment scale.
  3. Review the displayed grade table.
  4. Adjust the From and including % values as needed. This automatically converts the grade scale and pass mark based on the chance score for your assessment form. Ensure you understand the implications before making changes.
  5. Check the From and including score based on your assessment form's maximum score.
  6. Use View complete assessment scale for a full grade overview.
  7. Optionally, adjust the percentage to pass based on chance score.

Using the Angoff cut-score

To use the Angoff method for determining cut scores:

  1. Ensure the Angoff method is enabled under Admin > Global Settings.
  2. Verify that all items have Angoff values assigned. See the Angoff method article.
  3. Check for warnings if Angoff values are missing from any questions.
  4. Complete all setup steps before publishing the assessment.

For detailed information on setting the cut score and its formula using the Angoff method, see Setting the Angoff cut-score.
