Assessment form: scale

Prev Next

The Scale tab on an assessment form is where you pick the grade scale and pass mark that apply to the form. The grade a candidate receives is calculated from their percentage score against the boundaries you set here. Use this article to pick a scale on an assessment form; for managing scales centrally, see Assessment scales.

Scale tab on an assessment form

Pick a scale

  1. Open the assessment form and select the Scale tab.
  2. Choose a scale from the list. The scales available here come from Admin > Assessment scales.
  3. Review the displayed grade table to confirm it matches what you expect.
  4. Adjust the From and including % values where needed. Cirrus recalculates the grade boundaries before and after, distributing them evenly.
  5. Confirm the From and including score values against the form's maximum score.
  6. Select View complete assessment scale for a full grade overview.
  7. Optionally adjust the percentage to pass based on chance score.
Important considerations
  • Rounding rules: the tenant's rounding rules interact with the scale. Set the scale percentages with rounding in mind, otherwise borderline candidates may land on the wrong grade.
  • Shared scale updates: when an Admin updates a shared scale, in-use assessments do not pick up the change automatically. Reattach the scale to refresh.
  • Copied assessments carry the scale: when you copy an assessment, the scale comes with it. Verify the scale on the copy still matches the new context before publishing.

Set an Angoff cut score

To use the Angoff method to set the pass mark (instead of a fixed percentage):

  1. Confirm the Angoff method is enabled in Admin > Global settings.
  2. Confirm every item in the form has an Angoff value. See Angoff method > Set Angoff values.
  3. Check the form for warnings if any item is missing an Angoff value.
  4. Complete every setup step before publishing.

For the calculation behind the Angoff cut score, see Angoff method.
