Once your team has finished marking, the Marking > Results tab is where you publish results so they appear in Reports and (when configured) on the candidate dashboard. Use this article to find the screen, publish results, and understand what publication triggers downstream.
Open the screen
Open Marking > Results.

From here you can:
- View by schedule or by candidate.
- Search and filter with the advanced search, including filters by date and hierarchy.
- Switch the visibility filter between Show all, Show: you can publish, and Show: you cannot publish, to focus on the results you are responsible for.
Publish results
- Tick the candidates or schedules whose results you want to publish.
- Optionally narrow the list with the search box or the filter icon (advanced search by date, hierarchy, and more).
- Select Publish results. The publication dialog opens.

What publication does
Publication is the gate between marking-internal data and what the rest of the platform (and the candidate) can see. After publication:
- The results move from Marking > Results to Reports > Results.
- The results may show on the candidate dashboard, depending on the assessment's Show candidate results option.
- A webhook is triggered for any integration listening for result events.
Effect of the Show candidate results option
The assessment option Show candidate results controls what the candidate sees and whether the publication dialog asks for an extra choice:
| Show candidate results | Candidate dashboard | Reports > Results | Webhook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Never | No results shown | Available | Triggered |
| When assessor decides | Dialog asks whether to show; you choose at publish time | Available | Triggered |
| After each attempt | Shown automatically | Available | Triggered |
| After last attempt | Shown automatically | Available | Triggered |
For the When assessor decides case, the Show results on candidate dashboard checkbox appears in the publication dialog. Tick it to release the results to candidates; leave it unticked to publish to Reports only.
Inform candidates by email
Tick Inform candidates by email in the dialog to send a notification that results are available on their dashboard. Emails are sent from a Cirrus address.
For larger cohorts, organisations typically prefer not to send the Cirrus email and instead handle communication through their own channels. Leave the checkbox unticked in that case.
Select Publish to confirm.
Notes on publication
- Publication is one-way for the immediate visibility flip: results move from the Marking screen to Reports and (where configured) the candidate dashboard.
- Published results can still be subject to remarking or rescoring afterwards.
- Published results can be scheduled for a candidate review session.
- If a candidate did not participate, no email is sent for them (Cirrus has no grade to communicate).
Manual versus automatic publication
The assessment author (or the scheduler, when the author allows it) chooses how results are released:
- Manual publication: the right person opens Marking > Results and decides when to publish.
- Automatic publication for fully auto-scored exams: results publish after every attempt or after the last attempt, depending on the assessment option.
Who can publish
The Results tab is permission-gated:
- The hierarchy on the schedule must allow the user to see it. Set View reports under Admin > Users > [user] > Hierarchies for the relevant hierarchy.
- The role must have the Publish results permission on the assessors pool, or the equivalent site-role permission.
If you cannot see results you expect to publish, check both the hierarchy and the role permission.
