Article summary

There is a range of settings to control Proctorio's behaviour during exams. Learn what those are and how to use them.

Proctorio's remote proctoring solution works based on recordings. The tool records all candidates while taking their exams.

Next, the AI module automatically flags candidates that might have cheated.

In addition, there are many other options and possibilities to ensure the integrity of exams.

Below you learn which options are available and how to use them.

Recording options

These recording options determine what will be recorded. We advice to use this in combination to the Verifying options below.

Record VideoRequire the Test Taker to have a webcam and record the webcam for the entire duration of the exam.
Note: Not adjustable if ‘Verify video' and 'Record room at start’ are turned on, make sure to adjust before disabling 'record video'
Record AudioRequire the Test Taker to have a microphone and record audio for the entire duration of the exam.
Note: Not adjustable if ‘Verify audio’ are turned on, make sure to adjust first before disabling 'record audio'
Record ScreenCapture and record the full desktop screen for the entire duration of the exam.
Note: Not adjustable if ‘erify desktop’ are turned on, make sure to adjust first before disabling 'Record screen'
Record web trafficCapture screenshots and URLs of any websites visited during the exam.

Room Recording

With room recording candidates need to show their environment with the camera. Please think carefully about this option because it might interupt the exam and thus the candidate's focus.

Room Recording
DisabledNo room recording at all.
Record Room at startRequire the Test Taker to perform a room scan at the start of the exam.
Intelligent room recordingForces test taker to show entire room at random intervals during the exam.

Verifying

The verifying options are used in combination with the recording options. When switched on, Proctorio will run a couple of checks to ensure all recording options work properly.

Verifying audio, video and desktop
Verify audioEnsure that the webcam is working and it is not virtualized or broken.
Verify videoEnsure that the microphone is working and it is not virtualized or muted.
Verify desktopEnsure that the desktop recording is working and is being properly recorded.
IMPORTANT: turn off when record no Video/Audio/Screen/Web traffic is being recorded!

When Video, Audio, Screen and/or Web Traffic recordings are not in use (so switched of), these verification options should be switched off too. Otherwise candidates will not be able to start their exam.

ID Verification

ID verfication will ensure the correct person is attending the exam, by showing an ID. Live ID verification is considered an add-on by Proctorio. Only use it when it is part of your Proctorio Licence.

ID verification
DisabledNo ID verification at all.
Automatic ID verificationRequire the Test Taker to present photo identification prior to starting the exam and will be automatically scanned.
Live ID verificationRequire the Test Taker to present photo identification prior to starting the exam. The ID is then reviewed and verified by a Proctorio agent before they are allowed into the exam.
Signature verificationRequire the Test Taker to sign an agreement before exam start.

Full screen option

A very important and powerfull feature that prevents candidates from doing anything else on their computer except from taking their exam.

When fully activated, this option will force the exam in fullscreen and prevent access to other applications and websites.

Re-entry settings

The re-entry setting will prevent candidate from re-entering the exam.

We advise to disable this because we believe a candidate should be able to re-enter at any time. After having internet connection problems for example.

Note: By default candidates in Cirrus can always re-enter the exam within the schedule window.

Re-entry settings
DisabledRe-entry is possible.
No re-entryRequires the exam to be completed in one sitting, any disconnection will end the exam.
Agent re-entryRequires the exam to be completed in one sitting, any disconnection will end the exam. To resume the attempt, the Test Taker must open a chat with a Proctorio agent to allow re-entry.
