The notepad feature allows candidates to make notes during an exam. It is useful for internal working, particularly in assessments where the reasoning behind an answer is as important as the answer itself (for example, mathematical questions).
Notepad in candidate delivery
When a notepad is enabled for a question or assessment, a Notepad button appears at the bottom of the candidate's screen. Clicking it opens a modal window with a rich-text editor. Notes are saved automatically.
The notepad is unique per question: candidates can enter different notes for each question throughout the assessment.
Candidate notes are always visible to assessors during marking.

Setting up an assessment with notepad
In the assessment options, choose one of the following:
- No notepad - no notepad is displayed for any question.
- Only selected questions - the notepad is shown only for questions where the item option Allow notepad for candidate has been enabled. Configure this in the question's Options tab.
- All questions - the notepad is shown for all questions, regardless of individual item settings.
Where can markers find the notes?
Candidate notes are displayed on the submission form for each question, below the candidate's answer.

Notes are not visible in candidate review sessions.
