# Update/change schedule

Depending on how far you are in setting up your schedule, your options to make changes may be limited. This article describes the different scenarios.

Click on a specific schedule in the schedule overview to view or change its settings.

There are three scenarios:

1. Schedule created but not yet activated
2. Schedule created and activated
3. Adding or removing a candidate or invigilator

## 1. Schedule created but not yet activated

When you have created a schedule but have not yet activated it, you can make all changes, including:

- Change the title
- Change hierarchy for marking purposes
- Change the start and end date
- Change Proctorio settings
- Change Keycode
- Change external ID for integration

To make changes, click the three-dot menu in the top right of the screen.

Select **Options**. A dialog window opens with:

- The selected assessment - **cannot be changed**
- Options
- Remote proctoring settings

## 2. Schedule created and activated

Once a schedule has been fully created and activated, no changes can be made. However, if no candidate has started the exam yet, you can deactivate the schedule by clicking **Edit schedule settings**.

In the pop-up window, click **Deactivate**. This returns you to scenario 1 (Schedule created but not yet activated).

Do not forget to re-activate the schedule once changes are complete.

**Checklist:**

- Has a candidate already started? If yes, no changes can be made.
- Has the exam start date and time passed but no candidate has started yet? If yes, deactivate the schedule first, make changes, then re-activate.

## 3. Adding or removing a candidate or invigilator

The rules for adding or removing candidates are independent of the above scenarios. A candidate can be added at any time until the schedule is archived. A candidate can be removed as long as they have not yet started their exam. See [Scheduling: Adding and Removing Candidates](/upcoming-release/docs/scheduling-adding-candidates) for more details.

Invigilators can also be added or removed at any stage.
