Edit, archive, or delete an assessment

Use this article to understand what you can and cannot change on an assessment once it is in flight, and how to retire one when it is no longer needed. The rules differ depending on whether the assessment has been scheduled.

Assessment three-dot menu (Edit, Archive, Delete)

Edit an unpublished assessment

While the assessment is not yet published, you can change every option. Edit on the assessment dashboard.

To move a previously published assessment back to Draft, the assessment must not yet have been scheduled. Drafting a scheduled assessment is blocked because the schedule needs the published form to deliver.

Edit a scheduled or sat assessment

Once an assessment has been scheduled (or candidates have started sitting it), Cirrus locks the assessment so the schedule's behaviour stays predictable. To make changes, use one of:

  • Create a new version of the assessment when you want to amend a few items. The new version applies to future schedules; existing schedules keep using the version they were on. See Assessment versioning.
  • Copy the assessment and edit the copy when the changes are large enough that a new version no longer makes sense.
Latest version for live schedules

Existing schedules use the latest published version, as long as the new version is published at least 20 minutes before the schedule starts. The Assessments overview marks published versions with a green arrow and Published: yes. See Assessment versioning.

Unpublish or archive

To make an assessment unavailable for future scheduling:

  • Unpublish, if the assessment has never been scheduled or sat. Open the assessment, change its status from Live back to Draft.
  • Archive if the assessment has already been used. Archiving preserves the data but hides the assessment from the scheduling picker.

Archive from the Assessments overview: tick the row and select Archive from the bulk-action menu.

Delete

Deletion is restricted by design:

  • Allowed when the assessment has never been scheduled.
  • Blocked once the assessment has been scheduled or sat, to protect the data attached to deliveries.

When deletion is blocked, archive instead.
