Article summary

You can create Drag and Drop questions in Cirrus. Simply go to your Library, create or select a collection and click ‘+ Add’ or use the drop-down arrow to select this question type. You will be presented with the screen below.

The Drag and Drop question type was developed together with a customer. The assignment aims to move pictures over a background so they are positioned on the corresponding placeholders.

Enter the Title

Write down your Item title here. This is for internal use only; this title will be visible in your Library and further in the process. This title is not visible for candidates taking their exam.

Enter the question

Click inside the text box to enter (or edit) your question. Use the text editor for a range of text editing options.

Upload background image

Add the background image. This should not be too large to prevent scrolling issues in delivery. Also, please keep in mind that the background should have room for the list of 'responding images'.

Add possible responses

Now upload the images that represent the correct responses. These responses (images/labels) should ideally have the same size as the placeholders.

Draw connections

Finally draw connections between placeholders and the correct responses. This is where you match each placeholder with one response.

If you check the option 'duplicate responses' you can match multiple placeholders with the same response. This also means that the responses will 're-spawn'. In other words: while answering the list of responses will narrow down ('answers will not be used up') for the candidate, making the question harder to answer.

TIP:
To make the question even harder you can add distractors, as in responses that are not linked to placeholders.

Set maximum score for this question

You will also have to set a maximum score for the question. Simply enter a number into the box.

Save, close, preview & cancel

  • Click the ‘Save’ button to save the item.
  • Click ‘Save and Close’ if you wish to return to your collection overview.
  • You can use the ‘Preview’ button to see what the question will look like to the candidate and make sure that the correct answer receives the correct marks.
  • Hit 'Cancel' to exit the question editor. You will be see a warning about saving the page, otherwise your data will get lost.
NOTE:
Don't forget to preview your Item. This is a useful way of checking that the marks have been assigned correctly for auto-marked questions. It will also give a first idea of what the question will look like for the candidate.
