# Candidates using Proctorio

***This article describes the candidate experience while taking an exam in Cirrus with Proctorio.***

For the full candidate exam experience, see [How to take an exam](/v1/docs/how-to-take-an-exam).

To-dos before starting a Proctorio exam

To take a high-stakes exam remotely using Cirrus and Proctorio, candidates need a well-performing computer and a stable internet connection. We advise candidates to:

- Restart their computer before the exam.
- Run a speed test to confirm their internet connection is fast and stable.
- Remove any spyware or adware, as these can reduce computer performance and internet speed.
- Ensure the operating system and internet browser are up to date.

See [System Requirements](/v1/docs/system-requirements) and [Proctorio's requirements](https://proctorio.com/support/requirements).

## Getting started

To start the exam via Proctorio:

1. Launch a supported browser (Chrome or Edge).
2. Start the exam in Cirrus.
3. Install the [Proctorio extension](https://getproctorio.com/).
4. Complete the onboarding steps, depending on the [lockdown settings](/v1/docs/proctorio-settings), such as configuring the camera and microphone.
5. Read the introduction page and start the exam.

### Which assessments are remotely proctored?

Candidates can identify a remotely proctored assessment on the Cirrus Dashboard by the icon shown below:

## During the exam

Once the exam is running, the candidate will see a webcam thumbnail on the desktop as a reminder that they are being recorded.

The thumbnail can be moved so it does not obstruct the exam content, or minimised entirely.

## Chat support

To access support, click the extension icon in the upper right-hand corner of the browser before, during, or after the exam.

Note that Proctorio support does not know which exam provider the candidate is registered with.

              Cirrus supports only super users

Cirrus does not provide direct candidate support. The Proctorio chat can be used for Proctorio-related issues. We advise all exam providers to have their own candidate support desk available.
